An interesting experience DPing on this film, using realism to ground the audience, yet through unconventional camera techniques with minimal wides, allows the audience to feel engaged with the characters and their relationships within the confines of the world of art critics. Using medium-close-ups constantly instead of wides allows the audience to engage with the characters more and hide the painting that exposes her insecurities, allowing the audience to find out at the same time she does. This also allowed the characters to be framed as the very portraits they're critiquing. This creates an uncanny paradox when the characters stare down the barrel of the lens at the audience while the audience critiques the film, and the character critiques the audience to build sympathy in deconstructing an artist's portrayal of self-expression. The camera served to elevate the story through strong performances and grounded cinematography within minimal shake, allowing audiences to witness the protagonist break under the pressure of being exposed for her insecurities in a superficial world of prestige and ego. While the camera and lighting do evoke a sense of realism, the unconventional techniques of removing wides were a bold choice that allowed for a greater revelation when it finally occurred at the end of the film and prioritised the story and characters over traditional cinematic techniques.

Writing this project was ambitious. Exploring sisterhood and grief, this psychological thriller looks at psychedelics and both their negative and positive effects on mental health. This area of research is only now being opened up in Australia, and mixing it with themes of metamorphosis, self-identity, and grief, Chrysalis is a unique experience for audiences, breaking narrative conventions where her internal conflict becomes her external conflict. Managing the film set, scheduling, and maintaining safety was a huge undertaking, especially moving to multiple locations and having coordinated stunts. But the final product is finished and well worth watching.

Splendour in the Mud

Pushing the limits of what we could capture to meet the magnitude of this disastrous festival was no easy task, especially since our crew had little to no budget. However, using virtual production, extensive lighting plans, and camera coordination, we were able to achieve the impossible and craft a massive technical feat for student films and maybe even short documentary productions. Along with its magnitude, popping colours, and fun, light-hearted tone and atmosphere, compared to most documentaries, it has already been selected and won awards at film festivals in its first few months. For more information on where it's going to pop up, check out its social media, or contact me for more information.
